Matte Painting from Star Trek: The Original Series episode “The Menagerie, Part I”

This spectacular Matte Painting was featured in the third season Star Trek: The Original Series episode “The Menagerie, Part I”. This painting features the landscape of the planet Scalos, where the crew beams down to in the first act of the episode. The plaque on the painting will be removed by the restorers.

These painting were used by filmmakers to create the illusion of an environment that would otherwise be too expensive or impossible to build or visit. Historically, matte painters and film technicians have used various techniques to combine a matte-painted image with live-action footage.

This painting has received minor professional restoration and features a small metal plaque on the bottom featuring the words “Matte Painting by Albert Whitlock Episode “The Menagerie, Part I” Third Season 1968-1969.

Paintings like this from the original series are very scarce and this item is in extremely good condition.
